Frequently Asked Questions
Authorised Translations in Finland
Practical answers to the most common questions about official document translation in Finland — what it involves, who can provide it, and how to check credentials.
What is an authorised translation in Finland?
It is a legally valid translation of an official document that carries the same legal weight as the original text.
These translations are strictly required by Finnish government agencies (such as the Digital and Population Data Services Agency / DVV), courts of law, and universities. The professional title is strictly protected under Finnish legislation (Act 1231/2007).
Who is legally permitted to issue these translations?
Translations can only be performed by individuals who have been officially authorised by the Examination Board of Authorised Translators, which operates under the auspices of the Finnish National Agency for Education (OPH).
Please note that the older title 'official translator' (virallinen kääntäjä) expired in 2012; translators must now hold the explicit 'authorised' status.
How can I verify if a translator is officially authorised?
You can verify the valid credentials of any translator directly from the official Register of Authorised Translators (AKR) maintained by the Finnish National Agency for Education (OPH).
Do you accept physical paper documents or photographs?
No, only digital document files (such as clear PDF or DOCX files) are accepted. Photographs (such as phone pictures) are not accepted. If you have a paper document, please scan it into a PDF format before uploading.
How long does it take to receive the finalized translation?
The finalized, officially certified translation is normally delivered digitally to your email within 48 hours of your order, unless the document is exceptionally long and complex.
What payment methods do you accept?
Payments are processed securely via Stripe directly through our website during checkout. We accept all major Finnish online banking credentials and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard).
Are digitally signed translations officially valid?
Yes, they are. In accordance with EU regulations, a digitally signed authorised translation is fully legally valid and equivalent to a paper version with a handwritten signature and stamp. In Finland, authorities like the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV) prefer digital documents.
Do I need to send the original physical document by mail?
No. The authorised translation is prepared based on the digital file you upload. A copy of the source text used for the translation is always attached to the finalized document.
